Teacher Resources

As part of IPY, a number of organizations have compiled or developed new resources for teachers looking to help their students learn more about the earth’s polar regions.

As part of Polar Innovation Week, March 21-28, 2009, Youth Science Canada assembled polar education resources to assist teachers in presenting this information in the classroom.  The site includes lesson plans portals for middle school, as well as highschool students.

The Canadian Atlas Online has a wealth of information on IPY and Arctic science, as well as an interactive map.  Called “Canada and the International Polar Year”, the atlas features lively text, award-winning photography, superb Flash animations, and games and quizzes.  The site also features Arctic education resources on the Arctic created by the Canadian Council for Geographic Education that meet curriculum learning objectives.

The International Education and Outreach Sub-Committee for International Polar Year produced, Polar Science and Global Climate: An International Resource for Education and Outreach, which includes over 100 pages of hands-on science classroom activities along with a CD with electronic worksheets to print.  Check the International IPY Programme Office website to find out more about this and other educational resources.
